Settling In

Our first job upon arriving at Plymouth Rock was to build our homes and the Common House so we would no longer have to live aboard the ship.  The Common House would be used as a meeting place, church, school, and even a hospital.

First Casualty

We have had our first casualty of the voyage.  Dorothy Bradford fell off of the boat as we were disembarking at Plymouth Rock.  We are thinking that this will be the first of many Pilgrims that do not make it to Thanksgiving. However since we also need Native Americans at the feast, many of us will take on a new personality.

Landing At Plymouth Rock

We were planning on settling in Jamestown, Virginia. However, one of the storms blew us way off course.  It was November 11, 1620.  Since Winter was coming we decided to stay where we were. We called our new village Plymouth Rock, after Plymouth England.  Before we left the boat we swore in our new Governor......John Carver.

Here we are stepping off of the boat onto Plymouth Rock.

The Voyage

We boarded our boat, the Mayflower in August of 1620 and left from Plymouth, England. Our boat was only 90 feet long and 25 feet wide.  Since there were 102 of us and 30 sailors we were quite crowded on our boat.  We endured several storms that blew us off course, sickness, and even a baby being born on the voyage..........Oceanus Hopkins.  After 66 we arrived in the New World.

Packing Our Trunks

Our first task in our journey was to make our trunks and decide what all we could take with us to the New World. Space was quite limited so we decided that all we could take were our tools, cooking utensils and pots, a cradle if you had a baby, and of course our Bibles.

Our Mayflower Journey

This week the first graders were transported back in time to the 1600's--------1620 to be exact.  We are pretending that we are the Pilgrims on the Mayflower.  Each first grader has been given the persona of one of the Pilgrims on the Mayflower.

Will It Sink Or Will It Float??

This has been a big week in our pumpkin unit.  We predicted if we thought our pumpkins would float or sink and the we actually tried to float them.  The children were greatly surprised that the pumpkins actually floated.
