Grandparent's Day

Grandparent's Day was celebrated Monday, April 27, 2009, at Washington Township Elementary School.  35 grandparents visited the first grade room.  We had grandparents visiting us from far away and some that were as close as next door.  I think the farthest away anyone traveled this year was Indiana.  The first graders demonstrated their Chinese skills, read to them, and also interviewed them as to what school was like for them.  We discovered an interesting fact.........the things grandparents remembered about school and the things that were important to them are not all that different than what is important to us today......good friends, good teachers, and fun learning activities.

We started out the day by demonstrating our Chinese skills for our grandparents.

We interviewed our grandparents about what life was like when they were in school.  We also learned a little bit about what our parents were like when they were our age.  Our grandparents all gave us some advice about how to be successful in life.

We showed our grandparents how well we could read.  They were quite impressed that we were all "reading machines"

Spring Music Concert

The annual Spring Music Concert was held last night at the high school. The first graders sang two songs..."Willum" and a medley of folk songs.

Enjoy some music from the concert!!

March 19th Newsletter

Please mark you calendars for Monday March 23rd.  The annual spring music concert will be held at the High School at 7:00 PM.

I am looking forward to seeing all of you at the High School Saturday night.  The annual Washington Township Carnival will be held Saturday night from 5:30-8:00.

In reading this week we read the story "Lost".    We worked with the 00 sound like in the words look and cook.  We also learned about compound words .  We worked on the comprehension skill of sequencing.   We also worked on the grammar skill of proper nouns for the names of places.  I must say that the first graders are doing an outstanding job on our weekly skills tests.  Keep it up, guys!!

Reading Is What It is All About

The first graders are definitely becoming reading machines.  It is not uncommon at all to see them with their noses in a book.  We seem to come up with all sorts of interesting places to read.  But then just about anywhere is a good place to curl up with a good book.

Camp Read-A-Lot

Camp Read-A-Lot was a huge success.  The children kept telling everyone "We aren't doing any work today.....we are just reading"  If they only knew!!!!!!!!!

Mrs. Oswald was one of our guest readers.  She shared the book "I Can Read With My Eyes Shut"
Mr. Parrot shared "Tacky the Penguin".
Mrs. Casper shared a couple of her favorite books.."The Library" and "The Boy Who Was Raised by Librarians"
Mr. Schneider was even on of our guest readers.  He shared the book "The Little Engine That Could"

Martha even got in the spirit of things and provided us with a delicious camp lunch that we could eat in our rooms.

Guest readers were quite impresses with the listening skills of the first graders.

Blankets, pillows, and pajamas were definitely in order today.  We were all quite comfy as we laid around and read.

February 27th Newlsetter

We successfully filled the bead jar by the 24th of February so we are going to  be having Camp-Read-A-Lot next Friday, March 6th.  I told the kids they could wear their pajamas to school and bring a blanket.  We are going to move our desks and pretend that we are camp for the day.  We will devote the whole day to laying around and reading.

Chinese club was a huge success Thursday night.  We played some games, learned some ribbon dancing and enjoyed some wonderful Chinese snacks.  We will not have a Chinese Club meeting in March but will be meeting with the Wellman Elementary students and their parents on April 16th to enjoy some wonderful Chinese food.
